About the format
An image converter re-encodes a picture from one file format to another — decoding the source into raw pixels, then compressing those pixels with the target format's algorithm.
- JPEG was standardized in 1992 by the Joint Photographic Experts Group and remains the most widely supported photo format in existence.
- PNG became a W3C Recommendation in 1996, created as a patent-free, lossless replacement for GIF.
- WebP was released by Google in 2010; Safari was the last major browser to support it, in 2020 (Safari 14).
About this conversion
Image formats are a set of trade-offs, and converting between them is really about picking the right trade-off for the job. JPEG (standardized in 1992) compresses photographs brilliantly but has no transparency and degrades slightly on every re-save. PNG (1996) is lossless with full transparency, ideal for screenshots and graphics, but bloated for photos. WebP (2010) beats both on size but still meets resistance from older software. GIF is obsolete for stills yet refuses to die for simple animation. HEIC is efficient but barely opens outside Apple's walls.
