About the format
Image resizing (resampling) recalculates a picture's pixel grid at new dimensions, using interpolation to estimate the color of every pixel in the resized result.
- Downscaling a 12-megapixel phone photo (4000×3000) to 1200×900 keeps just over 1 megapixel — a 91% reduction in pixel count, and usually a similar cut in file size.
- Browsers implement high-quality smoothing for canvas resizing (the imageSmoothingQuality API, specified in the HTML standard), the same interpolation approach desktop editors use.
- Upscaling cannot create detail that was never captured — enlargements beyond about 2× visibly soften, no matter the tool.
About this conversion
Most images are used at a fraction of the size they were captured. A modern phone shoots 12-megapixel photos (around 4000×3000 pixels), while a chat avatar needs 400 pixels, an e-commerce listing 1500, and a web hero image rarely more than 2000. Resizing to the dimensions you actually need is the single most effective way to cut file size — a 4000-pixel photo resized to 1200 pixels keeps less than a tenth of its pixels, and the file shrinks accordingly.
This resizer works two ways: scale by percentage (drag to 50% for "half size") or enter exact pixel dimensions when a platform demands them — with aspect ratio locked by default so nothing stretches. It processes whole batches with the same settings, which is the fast path for preparing a folder of listing photos or a set of screenshots at once.
The main trade-off is that downscaling is one-way: detail removed by resizing is gone, so keep your originals and resize copies. Upscaling is the reverse problem — the resizer uses the browser's high-quality interpolation, which stays clean up to about double size, but no resampler can invent detail that was never captured. If you need a sharp large version, start from a larger source.

How do I resize to exact dimensions?
Switch the resize mode to "Exact dimensions" and type a width, a height, or both. With "Keep aspect ratio" on, filling in one side computes the other automatically; turning it off stretches the image to exactly the size you entered.
Will enlarging an image make it blurry?
Upscaling can't invent detail that isn't there, so some softness is unavoidable. The resizer uses the browser's high-quality interpolation, which keeps results clean up to about 200% — beyond that, consider starting from a larger original.
What format does the resized image come back in?
The same one you gave it: JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG, WEBP stays WEBP. Other formats (like BMP) come back as lossless PNG.
