Word CounterPrivate, Instant, In Your Browser
Paste or type text and every statistic updates live: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time at a typical 200 words per minute. Handy for essays with word limits, meta descriptions, abstracts and speeches. We think a word counter you paste an unpublished manuscript into should be incapable of leaking it — so ours analyses everything locally and sends nothing, to us or anyone.

Frequently Asked Questions
How are words counted?
Anything separated by spaces, tabs or line breaks counts as a word — the same rule word processors use. Hyphenated compounds like "well-known" count as one word; "don't" is one word too.
How is reading time estimated?
We divide the word count by 200 words per minute, a widely used average for adult silent reading, and round up. Slide presentations and technical material read slower; light fiction reads faster.
Is my text stored or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser as you type — there is no network request, no storage and no clipboard access. Paste a confidential draft and it stays confidential.
What counts as a sentence or a paragraph?
Sentences are split on terminal punctuation (., ! and ?), and paragraphs on blank lines. Abbreviations can occasionally add a sentence to the tally, so treat the sentence count as a close estimate rather than gospel.
