JPEGs from cameras and phones are saved at quality levels chosen to survive future editing — far higher than sharing requires. Recompressing them at a sensible quality routinely cuts 50-90% of the file size with no change you can see at normal viewing size, which is the difference between an email attachment that bounces and one that sends.

Typical jobs this handles: photo batches that need to fit an email or messaging cap, images for a website where load time matters, scanned paperwork produced at absurd quality by a scanner app, and phone photos eating cloud storage quota. How to choose the setting: Balanced is visually transparent for photographs and should be your default. Smallest is for thumbnails, previews and hard size limits — inspect the result for softening in fine texture before shipping it anywhere important. And remember JPEG compression is cumulative: compress the final version of an image, not one you'll keep editing and re-saving, and never re-compress the same file repeatedly to chase a few more kilobytes.
